Spring Cleaning

Are you an organized person? You know, the type of person that has their pantry organized, has their clothes in order by color, or labels on the bins in their garage? I am. In fact, I just described myself. I have no idea why I’m like this because I don’t think any of my siblings are like this. I also love rearranging the furniture in my house. Don’t ask me why, but every so often I just have to change it up. Either I get bored with it or feel it’s time to reorganize everything.

My husband is completely opposite and has a hard time getting rid of things. He can keep things forever, which is why it took us so long to get rid of our old microwave oven. This microwave oven was older than my son and my son was 24 at the time! It was a huge microwave oven that took up lots of counter space.

Recently I was thinking about how it’s easy for me to get rid of things, yet I’ve been holding on to some things. Things that I should have let go of a long time ago. I discovered I was organized on the outside, but still had clutter on the inside. Once I realized this, I asked God for help. I asked Him to help me get rid of the bad stuff on the inside. A few days later I read this in The Message version of the Bible. So don’t you see that we don’t owe this old do-it-yourself life one red cent. There’s nothing in it for us, nothing at all. The best thing to do is give it a decent burial and get on with your new life. Romans 8:12-14.

I read that a couple of times then laughed. God had spoken to me thru my love of organization. He knew I didn’t like clutter and I still had some of it buried inside of me. Like I do with our furniture, I kept rearranging it so that it didn’t take up lots of space, but it was still there in a small corner collecting dust.

Now that I’ve let go of the bad stuff I have room for more of the good stuff. The stuff I like. The stuff that makes me feel good. It’s like getting rid of my old microwave. I don’t see that old thing sitting there anymore. I have space now and I can put whatever I choose to put there.

Everything I have isn’t perfect, but now I can work with what I have. I read somewhere the best way to find out what we need is to get rid of what we don’t. Do you have things to get rid of? Spring is almost here.

It’s What’s for Breakfast

Have you ever eaten something that you didn’t feel like eating and ended up loving it? Have you ever said you didn’t like a song, but sang it to yourself all day? It’s funny how the mind tricks you into things.

Recently, I made a change to my morning routine. I went from having coffee for breakfast to having coffee and a scrambled egg for breakfast. I’ve never been a big fan of eggs, but I really wanted to make this change. After figuring out how much time I needed to prepare and eat the eggs, I set a schedule up for myself. I know what time I need to wake up, what time I need to get in the shower, what time I need to be in the kitchen, and what time I need to leave the house. Today, as I was eating my scrambled egg with turkey, I realized how good it was. I went from never wanting eggs, to adjusting my time so I can have them, to actually enjoying them.

There are things that we want to change about ourselves or our lifestyle, but it requires work and time. I think it all starts with getting your mind right. How do men and women get thru boot camp? I’m sure most of them go in physically prepared, yet still, some don’t make it. What about the people that have lost the weight they wanted or the people that now have degrees. What kept them going and not quitting?

There have been times when I wanted to quit while trying to reach a goal. During those times my mind went into overdrive telling me “I don’t think you can do it. I don’t think you have what it takes. I don’t think it’s your time.” First of all, why would I tell myself these things when I’m trying to accomplish something? Those mind games I mentioned… that’s the devil messing with you. He knows you’re tired and frustrated and he’s tackling your weaknesses.

Proverbs 4:23 says Above all, be careful what you think because your thoughts control your life.  What thoughts are controlling your life? Are they good or bad?

What mind games do you have going on with yourself right now? Who or what are you allowing to creep in and steal your joy, your drive?

Get your mind right. I did, now I have eggs for breakfast.
